2014 – PROJECT UPDATE
The Albert Road Cycle NMT project is currently in the tender process (10 April 2014). Construction should begin early May. The final design for bicycle infrastructure will be a colourised green cycle lane along both sides of the road (a Class 3 facility). Although this is not the ideal type of cycle lane from a safety point of view (we were really hoping for a segregated cycleway along Albert Rd), it should make cyclists more visible to drivers and encourage the use of this important connecting route between Southern Suburbs and the CBD.
2013 – DESIGN PHASE, ALBERT ROAD
The City of Cape Town is in the early stages of designing a non-motorised transport (NMT) upgrade for Albert Road. This will provide improved facilities for pedestrians, cyclists, the blind, and other active mobility users.
This route could improve CBD access for cyclists coming from many places in an enormous catchment area south of the N1 highway. Bicycle Cape Town and other interested parties and citizen groups are currently involved in the public participation process to give input into the design of the cycleways so ensure that they are safe and accessible to all.
LOCATION OF THE PROPOSED CYCLEWAYS
CBD link: Albert Road acts as a crucial link for bicyclers riding from the Southern Suburbs to the City Bowl. Bicycling along this route is viable for many people who live within 20km of the CBD. The proposed route will extend from the existing cycleway on Liesbeek Parkway, Observatory to Davison Rd, Woodstock, within a few hundred metres from the BRT cycleway that runs into town.
A VISION OF A BETTER ALBERT ROAD
Our vision for Albert Road is that it will be developed into a safe cycling route that connects the city with the southern suburbs. Currently there are two options for the design of the cycleLanes on the table. The first being a painted line and the second, more popular option, a two-way segregated cycle lane. Follow this LINK to explore the details and pros and cons of the proposals. The final design decision hasn’t been made yet, so this is where your input can still be of great value.
